The Checkered Origami I-Square

Checkered Patterns

by Serhiy Grabarchuk

An Origami square.

One hundred and nine 2x2 checkered patterns.

This is another square version of the Origami Checkerboard puzzle. It uses a traditional square Origami sheet of paper colored just on one of its sides.

You have one hundred and nine 2x2 checkered patterns formed with small isosceles triangles; these patterns are shown in the diagrams in this page.* Your challenge is to achieve every of them in the minimum of single "book" folds; see a sample. The final shape every time is a flat square; no matter what pattern will be at its back. Write us about your minimal solutions to these patterns. All the best results will be posted.

***
Even much more difficult challenges can be finding all the 3-unit-side checkered square patterns formed with small isosceles triangles, and their minimal solutions.

*) A puzzle with Pattern 11 was described by Nob Yoshigahara in his PUZZLETOPIA Special in 1992 with the credit to Diego Uribe of Argentina. There is a 4-fold solution to Pattern 11.

I've presented my puzzle with Pattern 108 in my new puzzle book
The New Puzzle Classics: Ingenious Twists on Timeless Favorites published by Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. as a Mensa Official Puzzle Book, and officially released on May 1, 2005.
