Checkered Origami Patterns |
|
|
|
Using sheets of paper (rectangular,
triangular, square, or in other shape) colored on one
side and white on the other, we can fold them into
different flat shapes with different color/white
patterns on their surface.
To solve checkered Origami pattern puzzles only simple folds
with no twists or bends (so-called “book folds”) are
allowed; a single fold can include one or several layers
of paper folded at a time. Final shapes with the
patterns must be flat. Similarly, after every fold every
new shape must be flat as well.
Finally, you should see every pattern as it is shown;
its color/white parts may be either plain, or composed
of several respective elements.
You can mark out and precrease your colored paper sheets
before the final folds as you need, keeping in mind that
your main and the only challenge is to achieve a chosen
pattern in the least number of simple (”book”) folds.
The first sample of checkered Origami pattern puzzle was
discovered by the author in 1995, and since then it was many times
presented on the Web and different periodicals. This
puzzle makes true Origamic piece combining Origami and
Puzzle, which gives a lot of space for perfection (in
sense of reducing of numbers of necessary folds).
Recently it has been published by
Sterling Publishing Co., Inc. in the author's puzzle collection entitled
The New Puzzle Classics: Ingenious Twists on Timeless
Favorites.
The respective pages of this website present all the
updated results for all known checkered Origami
pattern puzzles.
Write
us if you can improve any of these results.
An additional remark. Much more difficult challenges can
be posed when sizes of the respective basic patterns
will increase. These certainly will be, for example,
finding all the 4x4 checkered patterns or all the
4-unit-side triangles and, then, finding their minimal
solutions. Obviously, part of these bigger patterns can
be performed in similar and even the same ways as
smaller ones, but mostly they promise to be very and
extremely hard and... exciting! |
